"Nearly six thousand people have had sight restoring surgery and I thank the Australian people and The Fred Hollows Foundation that helped them. After sight restoring they can go to work, earn an income and send their children to school. I have a great job" - Sith Sam Ath, Country Manager, Cambodia

Around 166,000 people are blind in Cambodia of which 65% of cases are due to cataract. To target avoidable blindness in Cambodia, The Fred Hollows Foundation commenced work there in 1998 in close collaboration with the National Program for Eye Health (NPEH).

Since The Foundation began supporting three provincial eye units in Cambodia in 2000, approximately 5,778 cataract operations have been performed in the three provinces.

The Cambodia-Australia Cataract Blindness Prevention Program was launched in 2002. The program aims to strengthen the capacity of eye health personnel at all levels of the health system to deliver high quality, affordable and sustainable blindness prevention and treatment services in Cambodia.
