"We learnt the procedure of cataract surgery and how to assist the surgeon. I have learnt how everything can be arranged very well before and during the operation. If I didn't get the training it would all become very disordered" - Ai Hua, nurse in China

According to the World Health Organization, approximately nine million people in China are living with blindness, with cataract blindness accounting for 42% or 2.5 million of those cases. A further 400,000 people become cataract blind in China each year.

China's ever-increasing blind population equates to 20% of the world's blind population and surpasses the total population of countries such as Denmark, Finland and Norway.

The Fred Hollows Foundation has been working with local partners in Jiangxi Province China since 1998 to prevent and treat cataract blindness and other avoidable blindness conditions.

The current China-Australia Cataract Surgery Training Cooperation Program is working towards developing a sustainable model of high volume cataract surgery in the province which is accessible to the poor.
