The Fred Hollows Foundation has participated in some project activities in India to support blindness prevention and treatment. The Foundation plans to develop further programs in India to support the country's Vision 2020 goals.

The two projects The Foundation has previously supported include:

Bhubaneswar Eye Institute

The Bhubaneswar Eye Institute was opened in July 2006 and acts as a tertiary centre for the entire state of Orissa, which has as a population of approximately 36 million. The Insitute provides state-of-the-art tertiary eye care, a training centre for eye care professionals, a program for the rehabilitation of blind and visually impared people and a community eye care program to cover underserved areas in Orissa. Currently the Institute examines an average of 100 patients per day and performs an average of 12 operations a day.

Nandurbar Eye Hospital 

H V Desai Eye Institute (HVDEI) is a tertiary hospital complex in the State of Maharashtra. It is situated on the outskirts of the city of Pune in India. The Foundation supported HVDEI in the establishment of a satellite hospital, as part of the Institute, in the Nandurbar District, which is seven hours drive from Pune. Approximately 1.3 million people live in the Nandurbar district, many of whom are tribal and disadvantaged in relation to the general population.

The Nandurbar Eye Hospital opened in March 2007. The Foundation supported the project through the provision of equipment, including a Yag Laser with a slit lamp and an operating microscope. Approximately 386 operations were performed in the first month of opening the hospital and around 80-100 patients are examined each day.
