Current Activities

A core activity of the Eastern Africa Regional Program is to establish an innovative cost recovery model at the Nakuru Eye Unit in the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital.

The Eye Unit is being based on a private/public cost recovery model, where patients who are able to afford it, pay for their treatment. This will then subsidise patients who are unable to pay for their treatment.

This system presents an opportunity to try the first cost-sustainable model in Kenya. It is anticipated that, if successful, the model could be replicated throughout Eastern Africa.

Resources needed to achieve success using this model, include appropriate facilities and infrastructure, adequately trained staff, provision of equipment and supplies, and efficient administrative support.

Other program activities include:

  • Technical development and support
  • Collaborative development of a national Vision 2020 plan for Kenya to assist in identifying areas where The Foundation can provide assistance
  • Raising the profile of the program through partnership activities and input into ophthalmic journals and conferences
