Our Structure

In January 2007, The Fred Hollows Foundation in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom joined together to establish a global network to enhance Foundation operations and programs around the world.

Establishment

The global network was established to in order to:

  • encourage and enable more productive collaboration among the many ‘Fred Hollows' organisations and programs around the world;

  • manage the global growth of our work more deliberately and coordinate more effectively; and

  • sustain and protect the good reputation of the ‘Fred Hollows' name.

This exciting development was driven by a growing desire from all Fred Hollows organisations to find new and better ways of working together to increase our collective impact on reducing avoidable blindness in developing countries.

We were particularly looking for ways to do this that:

  • avoided unnecessary bureaucracy and costs; and

  • created a truly equal partnership between the funding bodies and the program entities.

Structure

After two years of discussions and consultations, a very simple structure was decided upon that we believe will meet our needs during the next stage of our organisational development.

  • It is a formalised global network, rather than a legally-constituted entity;

  • Its foundation stone is a Memorandum of Understanding between the parties, rather than a complex rule-heavy Constitution;

  • Its members are comprised of ‘founding signatories' - the 3 formal Foundation entities in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom and their associated international offices and programs, who are the ‘founding affiliates'; (See below)

  • Its central management structure is a Leadership Group, rather than a formal board or office bearers. Most importantly, the majority of the Leadership Group is drawn from people who implement programs in developing countries.

Members

The global network was established by both ‘founding signatories' and ‘founding affiliates' who collectively comprise the members.

The founding signatories are three independent formal legal entities, each with their own Board of Directors or Trustees:

The founding affiliates are program entities supported by one or other of the above:
