The 2012 National Reconciliation Week is now in full swing, giving Australians the chance to explore, appreciate and learn more about our shared history.

  • National Reconciliation week runs from May 27 – June 3
  • The dates commemorate two significant milestones—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision
  • The Fred Hollows Foundation has an ongoing commitment to the health and equality of all Indigenous Australians.
The theme for this year is Let’s Talk Recognition, focusing on how Australians can better recognise each other, and the contributions, cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Foundation encourages all of our supporters to use this week to engage with reconciliation and learn more about our shared history.

Professor Fred Hollows was a tireless campaigner for the rights of Indigenous Australians. He worked to reduce avoidable blindness in remote communities and was at the forefront of the establishment of Aboriginal controlled medical centres in the 1970s. He spoke out about the shameful state of Indigenous health compared to the health of non-Indigenous Australians, and took action to improve it.

The Foundation continues to work in partnership with Indigenous communities—to enable them to assert their right to sight and good health.
