Trachoma is still a big problem in Ethiopia. Trachoma is an infectious eye condition associated with overcrowding and poor sanitation. Millions of Ethiopians, particularly mothers and children, are at risk of developing blindness through this crippling, preventable disease.

Restoring sight in Ethiopia

Thanks to some great work with our partners, the Fred Hollows Foundation is making significant progress towards eradicating trachoma in Ethiopia. Our trachoma strategy is based on the World Health Organization’s SAFE recommendations, and involves a multifaceted approach to curb infection rates.

In addition to training, screening and surgery, we have supplied an incredible 7.7 million doses of antibiotics, educated 1.6 million children and community members in eye health, and built hundreds of water points and latrines to improve sanitation.
