The Humanity Award

Frequently Asked Questions

Humanity Award FAQs –

What is the Fred Hollows Humanity Award?

The Fred Hollows Humanity Award recognises Year 6 students in Australia who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in their community.

It celebrates students who show compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives, just as Fred did.

The Fred Hollows Humanity Award is an opportunity to honour students for something beyond academics and sport.

Who is eligible to be nominated for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award?

Any Year 6 student who shows kindness, compassion and integrity in their everyday life.

Who can nominate a Year 6 student for the Fred Hollows Humanity Award?

Anyone can nominate a Year 6 student.

Teachers, Principals, coaches, other students, community, and family members are all able to nominate a Year 6 student.

I want to nominate more than one Year 6 student. Can I?

Please do, we encourage it!

Just ensure you provide examples of how the individual students have shown kindness, compassion and integrity.

These help us in the selection process to understand how students have been living these values.

Why is the Fred Hollows Humanity Award only open to Year 6 students?

The Fred Hollows Humanity Award is only open to Year 6 students in Australia because in this year at school students are learning about great Australians like Fred.

We think it’s the perfect time to both recognise kids who are walking in Fred’s footsteps and inspire them to do more for their family, friends and communities.

The Award has run every year since 2012 and we fully plan on continuing it, so if your child is in a younger grade please wait until they are in Year 6 to nominate them.

How many students will receive an award?

Each year we select one outstanding nominee from each state and territory to become a Junior Ambassador for The Foundation. However, all students who are nominated will be recognised with a certificate.

I don’t know if the parent/guardian of the Year 6 student I’m submitting for the Humanity Award is aware that I’m nominating them.

You must have the permission of the parent or legal guardian of the Year 6 student in order to nominate them.

Please ask the parent or legal guardian before nominating the Year 6 student. You must also know the parent or legal guardian’s contact details.

My local newspaper has shut down. What do I put in the field that asks for my local media?

We understand that many local newspapers, supplements and magazines have ceased publishing.

If there is an online publication that has replaced it, or a local radio station, please enter that instead.

Why do you need to know my local newspaper?

After the ceremony, The Fred Hollows Foundation Communications team will send media releases and photos to local newspapers, publications and radio stations, congratulating the Year 6 students from each area.

The reason we ask for a local publication rather than a statewide one such as The Sydney Morning Herald is that these stories are more community-based and have a higher success rate of getting publicity in regional news outlets.

How will students be awarded and recognised?

The Fred Hollows Foundation will host a virtual ceremony to recognise all students who are nominated and to announce the state Junior Ambassador.

If you know a Year 6 student who shows compassion, integrity and kindness in their everyday lives, nominate them here.
