My name is Tehya and I am 10 years old. My love of The Fred Hollows Foundation started three years ago when we were learning about Fred at school. I found out about the charity he started, and I really liked how Fred was so helpful, and how he helped blind people see again. I think The Fred Hollows Foundation is doing a good job of helping people look after their eyes. And I think we should all fundraise at least once so that even more people can get their eyesight back. I’ve been hosting fundraising events since I was 6 years old and I would like to share some of my tips on how you can fundraise to help The Fred Hollows Foundation or another charity that you like. On Do Something Day, I wanted to help a charity so I made friendship bracelets and sold them for $1 each. I donated the money I raised to The Fred Hollows Foundation so that they can help people who don’t have the money to get their eyes checked. That was my first fundraising idea, but since then I’ve thought of many more! Keep reading to find out my 11 fun ideas that other kids can try for themselves. *COVER PHOTO: One of our youngest supporters, Tehya (10), pictured having a bake sale to fundraise for The Fred Hollows Foundation. The very first time I fundraised, I made friendship bracelets and sold them for $1 to my classmates and other students at school. You can also sell them in your neighbourhood and to your family and friends. Friendship bracelets are easy to make and everyone loves them. If you haven’t made them before, watch Sara Beauty Corner’s DIY friendship bracelet YouTube video to get heaps of ideas.
Scrunchies are really easy to make and fashionable! Sell them at school, around your neighbourhood or get your mum and dad to sell them at their work. You can also take orders from people and make them scrunchies in the colour or fabric they like. If you want to learn how to make scrunchies, watch Melly Sews’ how to sew scrunchies instructional video. Get an adult to help you with sewing if you haven’t done it before. You can also use good fabric glue instead if you don’t have a sewing machine.
If you like arts and craft then you’ll love making greeting cards as much as me. You can make them for birthdays, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Teacher’s Day, and any other special day you can think of! Once you’ve done one fundraiser selling greeting cards and people love it, then you can start taking orders for Christmas or other special days on the calendar. There’s lots of greeting card tutorials on YouTube that you can watch if you’re looking for cool ideas
Tehya Tehya is one of our youngest Community Fundraisers at The Fred Hollows Foundation. She is 10 years old, and has been fundraising to help us restore sight since she was in Year 2 at school. She has raised over $500 for The Foundation through her efforts. Tehya wants to inspire other people, especially children her own age, to give fundraising a try.
