The chances are, regardless of age or ability, there are people in your community who have been looking for an opportunity to try their hand at your sport. So, whether it’s opening up the local cricket nets and giving lessons to first timers, teaching your dead ball secrets to aspiring footballers or passing on your serve-volley skills in a tennis gala, community open days are a great way to raise funds. While you’re asking for a small donation from patrons for your sporting expertise, you could also be giving participants the bug at the same time and driving registration numbers.
One of the best aspects of being involved in sport is the inevitable stories you acquire along the way. With this in mind, why not get a famous sportsperson from the speaking circuit to come and tell a few yarns? It’s a great way to raise funds. Not only that but if you can arrange for someone within your chosen sport to come along and speak, you could inspire some new faces to join the club or coax some retired, local legends out of the woodwork. In terms of finding a home for the event, if your team has a clubhouse or sponsor pub, that’s a great start. Otherwise asking a local venue if they’d like to be involved is your next best bet. From there it’s a matter of choosing your sportsperson or motivational speaker and selling tickets for your event. You can sell tickets online via websites like Eventbrite or Trybooking. Alternatively, you can ask for a donation on a fundraising page you create and consider that payment for the event. Another tip would be to consider what notable sportsmen or sportswomen were involved with the club or once played in the area. * Please note, these donations are not tax deductible as they are a donation in return for something else and are also known as an in-kind donation.
For a sports club looking to raise some funds, the pub quiz night really is an oldie but a goldie! While you can see our fool-proof instructions for organising the local quiz here, the basic gist of it is outlined below
