Celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day

Indigenous Literacy Day is an opportunity for the wider community to help improve the lives of Aboriginal Australians.

Individuals, schools, booksellers and publishers across the country are raising money to provide books for Aboriginal children living in isolated regions on Indigenous Literacy Day (7 September).

The ability to read and write are key social determinants of good health.

In the Northern Territory alone, only one in five children living in very remote Indigenous communities can read at the accepted minimum standard.

For the past five years, The Fred Hollows Foundation has worked in partnership with The Indigenous Literacy Project. In 2011, The Indigenous Literacy Project became an independent foundation with its own charitable status.
