Teams running in this year’s City2Surf stepped up for Fred, managing to raise more than $10,000 more than last year’s efforts with a final tally of $25,000.
The Fred Hollows Foundation thanks the 10 teams and 82 individuals who laced up their shoes and ran the 14km track for Fred.
Running this year was octogenarian Allan Wareham, who celebrated his 44th City2Surf by surpassing his $1,100 target and raising $1,349 for The Fred Hollows Foundation’s work to end avoidable blindness.
Allan wanted to restore sight to 44 people, a person for each City2Surf he had run.
Allan ran this year’s City2Surf in honour of his mother who was blind.
“My mother raised five children while only being able to see out the size of a small keyhole,” he said.
“Because of that, I know what it’s like to suffer without a person’s vision.”
Thanks to Allan and the teams of this year’s City2Surf, The Fred Hollows Foundation will be able to continue its sight-saving work in Australia and across more than 25 countries.
Allana Ferguson, former international women’s rugby league and union player and an ambassador for The Fred Hollows Foundation, encouraged people to donate and help where they can.
“I can’t imagine living without my sight, and yet that’s the reality for millions of people across the world,” Allana said.
“The Fred Hollows Foundation changes lives by restoring sight. That’s why I’m proud to see people doing the City2Surf for such a worthy cause.”

Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation,
Gabi Hollows, said it was inspiring to see so many people to join the fight to end avoidable blindness.
“There are more than 36 million people in the world who are blind, and four out of five of them don’t need to be,” she said.
“I am always moved and inspired to see people still going to such great lengths to help realise Fred’s vision of a world where no person is needlessly blind.
“To everyone who participated in this year’s City2Surf, thank you for giving the gift of sight by taking on this challenge. We are incredibly grateful for your support.”
