The Fred Hollows Foundation's Regional Medical Advisor, Dr Wanjiku Mathenge, has co-authored a report in the Community Eye Health Journal about the importance of equipment maintenance in eye care delivery.

The report states that in order to provide quality services efficiently and effectively to the people who need health care the most, it is essential that equipment is well maintained and that enough spare parts and consumables are available to minimise interruptions.

The journal report also shows that many eye units in low- and middle income countries have vital equipment that is not working, often for long periods of time, and that this has affected the services offered to patients.
