GOODMAN:
GOOD BUSINESS AND GOOD IMPACT

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is widely known to generate multiple benefits – besides achieving positive social impact, companies that have CSR programs can build up brand equity, foster a positive corporate culture and build employee morale, as well as expanding networks amongst other advantages.  Goodman, founding corporate partner of The Fred Hollows Foundation in Hong Kong, is a company that takes CSR seriously.

THE WELL-BEING OF ALL PEOPLE MATTERS

Echoing the sentiments of The Foundation’s founder, the late Professor Fred Hollows who said that the most basic attribute of mankind is to look after one another, Goodman emphasizes that:

“We believe the sustainability of our planet, and the wellbeing of all the people in it, is everyone’s responsibility. That’s why we partner with passionate, and often grassroots, charities who, like us, are striving to do good in the world.”

The partnership between The Fred Hollows Foundation and Goodman started in Australia, where The Foundation’s international headquarters is located. In the initial days of The Foundation’s establishment in Hong Kong, Goodman donated office space for our fledgling team. This support expanded to sponsorship of three Fred Hollows Foundation projects in Hebei, Gansu and Guangxi Provinces, China. Goodman’s donations not only helped The Foundation to screen for eye conditions such as cataract, diabetic retinopathy and untreated refractive error and provide direct treatment; but also to train hundreds of doctors, nurses and community health workers and establish optometry centres, thereby building up the eye health infrastructure of these places, leading to long-term, sustainable change.

MAKING SPACE FOR GREATNESS

According to Jo Cameron, head of the Goodman Foundation: “Members of the Goodman team have been fortunate to visit project sites in both Gansu and Xingtang. In Xingtang, we were able to visit at both the beginning and conclusion of the project so we could see the real difference we were helping to make. The visits had a profound impact on all of the team members who attended. The general living conditions and infrastructure in the rural areas highlighted the incredible need for The Fred Hollows Foundation’s work and Goodman’s support. The highlight was perhaps in Xingtang, where our team was lucky enough to see the results of successful cataract surgery on some of the local villagers who regained their sight while our teams were in the midst of their visit.”

Goodman’s purpose is “Making Space for Greatness”, and it permeates all aspects of the company’s activities, from business to charity. “Making Space for Greatness” means helping all Goodman’s stakeholders to achieve their full potential.

Jo Cameron explains further: “For our customers, we design the best properties in the best locations, to enable our customers to get on with providing the best possible product and service to their customers.

For our people, we continuously work on creating the right culture that provides a space for our current and future people to reach the best of their potential and meet their personal and professional goals.

For our charity partners and the wider community, we provide support that enables them to help as many people as possible which in turn makes a tangible difference to the communities we operate in.”

MAKING A TANGIABLE DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE'S LIVES

This core belief in helping stakeholders fulfill their greatest potential is what makes Goodman and The Fred Hollows Foundation such strong partners. The Foundation works to restore independence and dignity, by restoring sight, thereby enabling children to perform well at school and people to return to work. As Goodman states:

“The Fred Hollows Foundation has a great reputation for making a tangible difference to so many people by addressing avoidable blindness and building the capacity and capability of the community in eye health. We love that The Fred Hollows Foundation shares many of our values and is an Australian organisation expanding its expertise into other locations around the world – just like us here at Goodman Group.”

One of Goodman’s main platforms for their support of The Fred Hollows Foundation is the annual Goodman Magic Mile Ramp Run event, where proceeds raised are donated to The Foundation. 2020 marks the 9th Magic Mile, and the event is a great opportunity for corporate teams and family groups alike to grow together, enjoy a fun day out, challenge themselves in an unusual sporting event, whilst concurrently raising funds for The Fred Hollows Foundation’s important sight-saving work. This year, due to the restraints brought about by the Covid-19 outbreak, the event has been moved to the end of the year; and we hope that other supporters of The Foundation will sign up and participate in the Goodman Magic Mile Ramp Run.

Despite the challenges of 2020, Goodman has remained committed in its support of The Fred Hollows Foundation, and would like to share a message with other supporters of The Foundation:

“We value our relationship with The Fred Hollows Foundation and respect the work they do. They are a great team of people who display professionalism, empathy and strong expertise in their field. They understand how to run projects, manage budgets and most importantly achieve results for the people we are trying to help. We hope to see them thrive into the future.”

The Fred Hollows Foundation is incredibly grateful for Goodman’s steadfast support and look forward to continuing our partnership into the future!
