As human beings, we must do things to help each other.
- Fred Hollows
Fred believed having compassion was the true essence of being human, and this is something The Foundation still values deeply today. The Fred Hollows Humanity Award, recognises year 6 students in Australia who reflect the values Fred lived by in their own lives.

The Award hopes to inspire and challenge students to show care and compassion for others, and make a positive impact in their school or community. This can be in anything: the aim is to inspire and challenge kids to be generous, kind and caring.

Since 2012, the Award has recognised the fantastic contributions of more than 480 ACT students and in 2015, they were presented certificates at the ACT Legislative Assembly. In 2015, the Award expanded into NSW, with 97 students receiving a Fred Hollows Humanity Award at NSW Parliament House.

Principals, teachers, parents and members of the community are all encouraged to nominate a student they know who is making a difference. Nominations for next year’s Award will open in mid-2016 for year 6 students in ACT, NSW and, for the first time, in Victoria.
