Why is your gift important?

Four out of five people who are blind don’t need to be. Read our stories on how your gift can help The Fred Hollows Foundation restore sight and bring hope to people.

Around the world more than 36 million people are blind, but four out of five don’t have to be. The most common forms of blindness such as cataract, trachoma and diabetic retinopathy can be prevented or treated with a simple and straight forward operation. Poverty is stopping a lot of people from having the sight saving surgery, which is widely available in places like Hong Kong.

The Fred Hollows Foundation works in 25 countries globally. A small donation of $150 can allow us to restore sight and change lives. The support will enable The Foundation to:

  • Train medical staff and build quality eye care teams in remote areas;
  • Provide medical equipment to raise the standard of eye care services; or
  • Organise screening camps to identify people with avoidable blindness for treatment as early as possible.

A PricewaterhouseCoopers study revealed that for every US$1 invested in ending avoidable blindness, it returned four times the economic benefit for a country’s economy. If more people in a nation can see, more people can go to school, work, raise children or start businesses.  In the past 25 years, we have restored sight to more than two million people.
