Fred Hollows Foundation ambassador Shellie Morris named Northern Territory Australian of the Year

Celebrated singer songwriter Shellie Morris has been named the Northern Territory Australian of the Year.

The 48-year-old – who is an ambassador for The Fred Hollows Foundation – has held music workshops in dozens of remote and urban Indigenous communities.

She creates songs with young people in an effort to raise awareness of and reduce the incidence of trachoma.

Earlier this year Shellie Morris and the Borroloola Songwomen won Song Of The Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards in Darwin for Wailwaliyangu li-Anthawirriyarra a-Kurija (Saltwater People Song). The track is from the album Ngambala Wiji li-Wunungu (Together We Are Strong) sung entirely in Indigenous languages of the Gulf Country.
