Global Campaigns

What We Do

The Fred Hollows Foundation has a clear vision – end avoidable blindness so that everyone can exercise their basic human right to sight. To do that, we need to raise funds and build a movement of supporters who will lend their voice to our cause. We are committed to raising awareness on the prevalence of avoidable blindness so that we can reach more people and help disadvantaged communities access high quality eye care.

SHE SEES

In order to address gender disparity in blindness as a key global health issue, we launched our She Sees initiative in 2018.

Women are 1.3 times more likely to be blind than men. The She Sees campaign is a vehicle that will narrow that gap. Fewer blind women in the world is a win not just for those women, but a win for all of us – and is a major step in the fight against avoidable blindness and global gender inequity.

She Sees is about placing women and girls firmly at the centre of The Foundation’s programming, service delivery, partnerships, and global advocacy work.

She Sees will elevate and advance our gender-focused work globally and support the delivery of high quality programs that work to close the gender gap in blindness around the world.

SEE NOW

See Now is is the world’s first global movement to end avoidable blindness, powered by The Fred Hollows Foundation, and mobilising diverse audiences to take action on eye health through digital-first storytelling. More than 20 million people globally have been reached by this innovative campaign.

See Now mobilised over 80,000 Americans to bolster the advocacy work of Prevent Blindness, securing an increase of $USD 40 million for eye health initiatives in the US. As a result:

  • The Vision Health Initiative at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had its funding doubled

  • The Glaucoma Project received a much-needed funding boost

  • The National Eye Institute received a $USD 39 million increase

When funding was slashed to programs that were integral to Iowan children receiving quality school vision screenings, See Now and Prevent Blindness Iowa stepped up to fight for that funding back. That funding was restored, ensuring Iowa’s kids continue learning to their potential with healthy eyes and a clear vision.

In 2019, See Now secured Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan as its Global Champion in India, possibly the biggest movie star in the world. Bachchan’s work with See Now and Vision 2020 was the first time that the star had worked through an NGO directly.

The result was a public awareness campaign that drove demand for eye-care to transform the debate on vision in India. The successful pilot in Uttar Pradesh reached millions of Indians with a simple ask: go and get your vision checked – lifting the issue into the spotlight and saw a massive increase in people accessing vision services.
