Barangay Health Workers' Story

On the frontlines of community health

In the Philippines, Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) are the backbone of the nation’s health system. These dedicated volunteers make door-to-door visits in their local communities, delivering basic health services and guiding people to the treatment they need.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, these women were instrumental in saving lives, providing essential care when communities needed it most. Now, with the support of The Fred Hollows Foundation, they are helping to save another vital sense: sight.

Under a project initiated by The Foundation and supported by the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP), Barangay Health Workers in Capiz Province are being trained in eye health for the first time.

In Roxas City, 85 BHWs received their eye testing equipment and learned how to conduct basic vision tests using visual acuity charts. They also learned how to identify common eye problems and refer patients for further treatment.

The very next day, Mary Jane, Jovelyn, Marivic, and Marife took to the streets of Ivisan. Going house by house, they checked people’s sight and helped raise awareness about the importance of eye health.

Curious neighbours came forward to have their eyes examined. Each test was a chance to prevent avoidable blindness, and each interaction reinforced the value of community care.

A personal commitment to the community

For Mary Jane, this work goes beyond professional responsibility — it is a calling.

“It’s really my passion to serve the community even if I don't earn from it. I am happy when I get to help other people in my community. It’s like my therapy and it motivates me,” she says.

With Barangay Health Workers on the frontlines, more people in the Philippines are gaining access to the eye care they need — all thanks to the dedication of these volunteers and the support of donors like you.
