Christine Hawkins AM (Chair)

Christine Hawkins profile
Originally an economist with the Reserve Bank of Australia, Christine spent her senior executive career as a corporate adviser in investment banking, specialising in capital markets and financial structuring. In 1997, she established Cinnabar International Pty Limited, which provides advice on effective governance for companies. Christine's reputation in governance leadership is maintained through her position as Board and Governance Principal with Directors Australia, and a number of board roles. In addition, she holds several appointments as Chair and member of State government audit and risk committees and is Chair of a private higher education institute. Christine has served as a member of The Fred Hollows Foundation’s Board  Finance and Audit and Governance, People & Culture Committees.

Christine served on the Global Board from 2015 to 2024. She was a member of the Global Board’s Governance, People & Culture Committee and Chair of the Global Board’s Finance and Audit Committee.

 

 

Wanjiku (Ciku) Mathenge (Vice Chair/ Secretary)

Ciku is a senior consultant ophthalmologist specialising in medical retina and community ophthalmology. Originally from Kenya, she now resides in Rwanda, where she is a Co-Founder and Director of the Rwanda International Institute of Ophthalmology (RIIO). At RIIO she has driven training, research, and community services, including leading Rwanda’s first national blindness survey and establishing its first accredited ophthalmology residency program. Previously she played a key role in transforming a public eye clinic in Nakuru, Kenya, into a model facility for clinical care and research. 

Ciku was the first certified trainer for Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB) in Africa and designed the East African Eye Care Program for The Fred Hollows Foundation, serving as Medical Advisor for Africa for 15 years before moving to Orbis International in the same role. She is a Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Rwanda where she previously headed the Ophthalmology Department at Kigali Health Institute. 

Ciku has worked with WHO AFRO to develop eye care interventions for primary health workers and led the creation of Rwanda’s primary eye care curriculum. She has trained numerous ophthalmologists across the region in microsurgery and medical retina. Ciku was a Member of the Board of Trustees of the International Council of Ophthalmology from 2013 to 2021. She serves on the Board of the Ophthalmology Foundation and is the only African member currently inducted into the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis. She has been on the Ophthalmology List of 100 most influential female ophthalmologists, an IAPB Eye Health Hero and Vision Excellence Award winner. She is the first female President of the African Ophthalmology Council. 

 

 

Michael Johnson (Treasurer)

Michael had a close relationship with Fred Hollows and was one of the team that set up The Foundation. He has served as a board member since its establishment in 1992. Michael has extensive experience as a professional economist, educator and researcher as well as engaging in the practical work of delivering development programs. He is an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences at UNSW and a Life Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge. He is an Editor of the research and policy journal, the Economic and Labour Relations Review published by Sage.

In 2015, Michael was invested as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the blind and vision impaired, to education, and to the community. Michael serves as a member of the Global Board’s Governance, People and Culture Committee and Programs and Partnerships Committee, as well as Deputy Chair of the Global Board. He is also a Trustee of The Fred Hollows Foundation (UK). 

 

 

Rosemin (Rosemeen) Bhanji

Rosemin (Rosemeen) Bhanji profile
Rosemin is a seasoned legal, compliance and governance expert with over 25 years in the East African Banking and Financial Services sector, until recently serving as Director of Group Legal Services. She sits as an Independent Non-Executive Director on other corporate and non-profit boards (insurance and health), is a professional Lawyer, Advocate of the High Court, International Mediator and Trainer.

As a certified global mediation trainer and Court Annexed Mediator with the High Court of Kenya, Rosemin has been invited to judge international mediation competitions. She has also chaired community-based Dispute Resolutions Boards in East Africa. She holds a Global Accredited Director Leadership Certificate and an international ESG certification.

Known for her integrity, compliance and governance skills and conflict resolution expertise, Rosemin is a dedicated leader committed to positive social impact. Rosemin is the Chair of the Governance Committee and serves on the Protection Committee of the Fairtrade Africa Board. 

 

 

Monica Kerretts

Dr. Monica Kerretts-Makau is the Academic Director at Thunderbird’s Centre for Excellence for Africa and a Professor of Practice and works with  the Executive Education programs and Consulting Lab programs for Thunderbird across the globe. She specializes in governance, leadership, change management, and ICT4D policy, with extensive experience in both multilateral institutions and the private sector.

 

She has been part of the consulting projects for World Bank, UNCTAD, IDLO, GIZ and ILO on the digital revolution and governance and served on the World Bank’s Digital Dividends Advisory Team.

Dr. Kerretts-Makau previously served as co-chair to the UN-OSAA STEM Working Group, and has served on multiple boards for over a decade, championing women in leadership. She is a certified Board trainer trained by the  IFC Governance program and a Prosci-certified Change Management Practitioner, having trained numerous organizations.

A PhD graduate from the University of New South Wales, Australia, with a Master’s from Salford University, UK, she has received accolades such as Top 100 Reputational Africans (2018) and Top 100 Influential Africans (2017). Previously, she was Faculty and Advisor to the Dean at Strathmore Business School, where she taught in MBA and Executive Education programs. She has also worked with KPMG (East Africa & Sydney) and Standard Chartered Bank Group.

 

 

Mette Kinoti

Mette Kjaer Kinoti (She/Her), has more than 30 years of international development experience. She is a seasoned programme development leader and an expert in strategic leadership and management; organizational development of civil society organisations; programme management; institutional fundraising, nutrition, gender mainstreaming and women empowerment. She worked with Amref Health Africa for twenty years, first as a Kenya country director (2000-2010), then as Head of Program Management at Amref Health Africa Headquarters, where she led strategic development and all program implementation for the global Amref Health Africa organization in Africa.  

From 2014-2018, Mette served as Vice President-Africa, Helen Keller International (HKI) based in Senegal, and rejoined Amref Health Africa as Group Programmes Director from 2018-2021. She has also served as a World Bank CSO Committee on Health, Population and Nutrition member. She was active in the formation of IHP+ ensuring Civil Society voices from the South and promoted South-South learning. Mette was a founder of the Health NGO Network in Kenya and is presently the Board Chairperson of Amref Health Africa Kenya and the International Centre for Women and Research Africa (ICRW Africa).  

 

 

Dr Josea Rono

Dr. Josea Rono is the Co-founder and Managing Partner at E&K Consulting Firm, a pan-African advisory and investment firm specializing in the healthcare, innovation, finance, and climate /energy sectors. He has advised on healthcare transactions worth over $20 billion in the global pharmaceutical industry and led strategies for healthcare businesses worth $160 million across 30+ countries in Africa, Europe, and the Americas. 

Dr. Rono’s career spans public, private, and international development sectors, with advisory roles at Gates Foundation, WHO, Gavi, the World Bank, UNFPA, McKinsey, Novartis, Merck, Shell Foundation, USAID as well as over 15 Governments in Africa and beyond. 

Beyond E&K, Dr. Rono co-founded The Health Exchange (HealthX; now rebranded to E&K Connect), a platform fostering innovation and investment in African healthcare, finance, and technology. He is a recognized expert in health financing, investment mobilization, and strategy advisory, having served as a World Bank Advisor on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Kenya. 

A Karolinska Institute Global Health PhD graduate, Dr. Rono is a Tutu, Kofi Annan, Wellcome Trust and Swedish Institute Fellow. His work on Africa’s first malaria vaccine was featured in Time’s 2022 list of world-changing innovations. He has held board positions at Grand Challenges Canada, Merck, and Living Goods and is a WHO Global Advisory Group member on vaccines. Named among the Top 100 Most Influential People of African Descent, he is currently writing his first book on global healthcare business and Africa’s renaissance.
