Your Donation Shortens a 300km Journey to Sight
In Rwanda's Western Province, a family may need to travel at least 300 kilometers to reach the nearest eye care center—equivalent to circling Hong Kong Island four to five times. For most farming families, neither the cost of treatment nor the transportation fees are affordable.
Yet Rwanda has only 22 ophthalmologists in total, which means there is only one ophthalmologist for every 1 million people.
Dr Tuyisabe Theophile, a pediatric ophthalmologist in Rwanda, says: "This is not sustainable because you become exhausted, and then you are rushing to finish treating patients."
He continues: "If there were enough ophthalmologists who are well-trained and have time to develop themselves, things would improve. Otherwise this situation will just continue until we become overloaded and can do nothing."
At The Foundation, we believe sending foreign doctors is only a short term fix-not a long-term solution.
Our commitment is to
train local eye health professionals so they can become "self-sufficient" in eye care. This is not just treatment - it's a promise to the community and a long-term investment in eye health.
