The Fred Hollows Foundation today pays tribute to Michael Johnson AM, a long-time stalwart of the organisation whose commitment and leadership helped shape The Foundation from its earliest days. Michael passed away on the afternoon of Thursday 26 March, following a short illness.

Michael was one of The Foundation’s original Board members, serving continuously since its establishment in 1992, with only two short breaks.

Over more than three decades, he held almost every governance role across the organisation and its international entities, helping to build the strong, values-led NGO that exists today.

Michael first met Fred Hollows through a mutual friend, and the two forged a close friendship, often running together in Centennial Park. That personal connection translated into a lifelong commitment to Fred’s vision of a world where no one is needlessly blind.

Chair of The Fred Hollows Foundation Jane Madden said Michael’s contribution was immeasurable.

“Michael Johnson was one of the true architects of The Fred Hollows Foundation. His integrity, wisdom and deep belief in Fred’s vision guided this organisation through its formative years and far beyond,” Ms Madden said.

“Michael brought rigour and humanity in equal measure. He asked the hard questions, held us to the highest standards of governance, and never lost sight of why The Foundation exists — to restore sight and transform lives.

“He made a promise to Fred that he would keep the foundation true to its mission and he has never stopped doing that.”

Throughout his tenure, Michael served as Acting Chair, Co-Deputy Chair, Honorary Treasurer, and as a member of numerous Board committees, including Finance and Audit; Governance and Nominations; Programs and Partnerships; and the Medical Advisory Committee. He was appointed Co-Deputy Chair by the Board in May 2019.

Michael also played a critical role in strengthening the Foundation’s global footprint, serving as a founding Board member of The Fred Hollows Foundation Hong Kong, a Board member of The Fred Hollows Foundation UK, and Treasurer and Board member of The Fred Hollows Foundation Kenya.

In 2015, Michael was invested as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the blind and vision impaired, to education, and to the community. It was an honour he so richly deserved.

Chief Executive Officer Ross Piper said Michael’s influence extended well beyond formal roles.

“Michael was a quiet force — thoughtful, principled and deeply committed to doing things properly,” Mr Piper said.

“He cared passionately about governance, financial stewardship and accountability, because he understood that strong foundations enable greater impact. Countless people around the world can see today because Michael helped ensure this organisation was built to last.”

Mr Piper said Michael remained a trusted advisor and mentor to many within the organisation.

“He never sought recognition, but his legacy is woven through everything we do. We are profoundly grateful for his decades of service, and we will honour him by continuing to pursue Fred’s dream with the same integrity and determination Michael embodied.

“All of our staff are deeply saddened by Michael's loss, as I know are Gabi and the Hollows family.”

The Fred Hollows Foundation extends its deepest condolences to Michael’s family – his wife Paula and their sons, friends and loved ones. He will be remembered with great respect, gratitude and affection by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
