About the Legacy of Light
The Legacy of Light allows you to extend your compassion beyond your lifetime, while ensuring your loved ones are well provided for.
By including The Fred Hollows Foundation in your Will or planned giving arrangements, your legacy can support eye care services, train local professionals, and help restore sight for people.
A legacy gift is not just a donation — it is a continuation of your values.

2 Ways to Leave a Legacy of Light
1. Gift in Will
A Gift in Will is one of the most meaningful ways to create long‑term impact. You may choose to include The Fred Hollows Foundation in your Will through:
- A fixed sum (pecuniary gift)
- A share or the remainder of your estate (residuary gift)
- Specific assets, such as property, shares, or other valuables
Please note: Independent legal advice is recommended when preparing or updating your Will.
2. Life Insurance Giving
Naming The Fred Hollows Foundation as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy is a thoughtful way to plan a future gift. It allows you to make a meaningful contribution without impacting your current financial commitments.
Please note: All arrangements must be approved by your insurance provider.

Why The Fred Hollows Foundation?
Around 9 out of 10 people who are blind or vision‑impaired live with conditions that are preventable or treatable. Yet many are unable to access care due to poverty, location, or limited health services.
At The Fred Hollows Foundation, our focus goes beyond restoring sight. We work to strengthen eye care systems so communities can care for their own eye health in the long term — through training local professionals and building sustainable services.
This approach reflects the vision of Professor Fred Hollows. Toward the end of his life, he and those closest to him considered how his work could continue beyond him — ensuring that the commitment to equity, dignity, and the right to sight would endure.
Today, his vision lives on through The Fred Hollows Foundation. Our work continues to ensure that no one is left needlessly blind or vision impaired.
Frequently Asked Questions
None of the below constitutes legal advice. If you have any queries regarding the drafting or legal consequences of your will, it is advisable to obtain independent legal advice.
Your Will and insurance policy are private documents, and there is no obligation to inform us. However, if you choose to let us know, it allows us to thank you. All information is treated confidentially.
An executor, appointed in your will, manages your assets, settles debts, and distributes your estate as per your wishes. They must be over 21, trustworthy, and capable of handling these responsibilities.
There is no minimum amount. Every gift, regardless of size, can make a meaningful difference. As a reference, donations from around HKD 6,000 can help support approximately 40 cataract surgeries, restoring sight to people in need. Leaving a small share or percentage of your estate to The Fred Hollows Foundation is known as a residuary gift, which allows you to take care of loved ones first while still making a significant impact.
If you plan to donate property to a charity, ensure it is fully owned by you, free of mortgages or ownership disputes. Charities often prefer that your will specifies selling the property first and then donating the proceeds.
Estate duty in Hong Kong was abolished on 11 February 2006. No estate duty is payable for deaths occurring on or after that date.
If you fail to draft a will, the distribution of your estate after your passing will be dictated by the rigid framework of legal stipulations—an impersonal mechanism that may not reflect your own wishes. This statutory process, while systematic, often demands your heirs to navigate the labyrinthine task of proving familial ties, a procedure both laborious and fraught with delays.
