About The Humanity Award

Founder of The Fred Hollows Foundation Professor Fred Hollows dedicated his life to helping others to help themselves and restoring sight to some of the world’s poorest people.

The Humanity Award recognises Upper Primary students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by making a positive difference in the community.  Since 2012, the Award has acknowledged more than 1800 primary school students in Australia and Hong Kong.

When are the key dates for the award?

How to nominate for the Humanity Award 

All P4 to P6 students (10 to 12 years of age) can enter. We welcome both individual and group applications – all applications will be assessed together.

School principals and teachers are encouraged to nominate more than one student or student group.

Each application should be accompanied by a submission showing how the student/s made a positive contribution to the community over the past year. Please provide information or images (if appropriate), to support the submission. 

What are the award criteria?

Students should be able to demonstrate one positive action they have done to the community in the past one year. This should bring positive impacts to the society and demonstrate at least one of the following values upheld by our founder Professor Fred Hollows:

  • Show compassion, integrity and kindness in everyday lives
  • Action and collaboration
  • Empowerment: Help people to help themselves  

What do Humanity Award participants receive?

Five Humanity Award Ambassadorswill each be recognised with a trophy. Schools of the five Ambassadors will also each receive a trophy. 

The school with the highest number of applications will be named Most Active Participation School.

All participants will receive a Fred Hollows Humanity Award Certificate to recognise their positive impacts. 

All participants will automatically join the Humanity Award Alumni – a global circle of young people who give back to the community.
